b. 1991 Denver, Colorado

Raisa Gates is a Filipina-American artist based between Arizona and Paris. From an early age, the daily ritual of drawing her family marked the beginning of her creative language. Living nomadically through much of her adult life, she turned to photography to continue documenting her fascination with the human experience. Naturally drawn to the solace of creating, she returned to the paintbrush in 2020.

Working primarily on large-scale figurative painting, she uses the human body as a vehicle for exploring the relationship between form and color — and through it, the deeper currents of myth, stories, and human connection. Her canvases move between presence and absence, weaving narratives into emotional landscapes that ask what it means to be a person among other people.
